Résumé du projet de thèse: The aim of the thesis is a sensory substitution device allowing to reach a target object without vision. The prototype is built on a choice of spatial metrics accessible from an artificial sensor, to be matched with a choice of percepts initiated by audio and tactile stimuli. The efficiency and comfort of the human-machine interfacing resulting from these choices will be tested on typical participants (blindfolded) mainly in a controlled environment, in a laboratory and in a virtual environment; the interest and the adaptation of the device will be evaluated with the participation of blind users, in a more open real environment, in a context of game and leisure.
A fundamental and theoretical part related to psychophysics and embodied cognition must lead to a validation of the proof. The valorization of the work requires to maintain a privileged contact with people deprived of vision, their support structures, their institutions or their associations. The logistics of the project include interactions with the other teams of the Sam-Guide consortium ensuring coordination and compatibility of skills and technologies.
