This talk will investigate mechanisms underlying trust in communication under conditions of uncertainty, when learners cannot fully verify whether the information received from others is true. Three test cases will be considered. First, empirical studies will investigate how learners use a continuous estimate of internal confidence to decide when to revise their beliefs and whom to trust, demonstrating that trust is regulated by perceived quality of evidence rather than binary judgments of accuracy. Second, I will consider how children may use informativeness as an indirect cue of knowledgeability, thus allowing them to adjust trust in cases where no internally generated cue or externally conveyed information about accuracy can be gathered. Additionally, I will present evidence suggesting that  trust in communication can emerge through a bootstrapping process, where exposure to testimony fosters further trust in communication, even without confirmatory evidence. These findings suggest that humans employ epistemically rational mechanisms to manage trust in uncertain informational environments, supporting learning from unverifiable sources.
